Heavy lifting solutions progress agricultural project

ZAMBIAN FERTILISER PROJECT The heavy lifting processes will contribute to the completion of the Zambian Fertiliser Project and ensure that it meets the target of increasing crop yields by 30% to 50%
Leading heavy lifting solutions provider Sarens continues its involvement in the Zambian Fertiliser Project – which aims to further develop the Zambian agricultural industry – by contributing its expertise and machinery to carry out heavy lifting and transport tasks until project completion in 2027.
Sarens has dedicated a Terex Demag CC2800-1 crane, equipped with an S7 boom system and 300 t of super-lift ballast, to meet the lifting and transportation needs of the project, which include the hoisting of compressors, tanks columns and furnaces, with the longest column extending to a height of 80 m and the heaviest weighing up to 250 t.
As work progresses, this crane will be reconfigured to an HSWSL_S7 setup, with an 84 m main boom and 54 m luffing jib.
The Zambian Fertiliser Project, which started in 2023, will have a significant impact on the Zambian agricultural industry by helping to address food security challenges. This includes giving Zambian farmers access to “higher quality” fertiliser and the opportunity to adopt more sustainable and efficient farming practices.
The project will reportedly create between 5 000 and 10 000 jobs in Zambia, as well as increase the country’s crop yields by about 30% to 50% over its duration.
“Sarens has been known throughout its history for its clear support for the communities in which it operates”, Sarens Southern Africa regional director Tim Biesemans says, citing its having enabled access to its range of all-terrain 55-t to 400-t cranes and 180-t to 600-t crawler cranes, as well as its “highly specialised local personnel”.
“We are proud to be able to bring our experience gained in Zambia, since our arrival in 2018, to the development of projects that have a real impact on the lives of citizens, such as the Zambia Fertiliser Project. We look forward to continuing to contribute our resources, especially local resources, to the improvement of employment and the economy in Zambia in strategic projects such as this,” concludes Biesemans.
